Bio

“An entrepreneur at heart and an artist at night. “ This best describes Herbert Horatio Simmons, better known as Herbie in the art world. Herbie was born in Glendale, CA, and was raised in Washington, D.C., Lafayette, Louisiana, Pasadena, CA, and Atlanta, GA. A product of John Muir High School in Pasadena, CA., and Morehouse College, in Atlanta, GA, Herbie obtained a B.A. in Finance, and returned to Los Angeles, making it his home.

Herbie’s constant exposure to the artwork in his father’s collection, which includes the works of the late William Tolliver, Miro, Romare Bearden, Otis Hollingsworth, and Dr. Simmons himself, as well as a host of others, in addition to living and visiting different places in the U.S. and around the world have provided the framework for Herbie’s boundless and open minded perspective that perpetuates all his artistic endeavors. A fascination with the unknown future and God’s true intent for human beings is the driving force behind Herbie’s abstract, innovative, colorful, and at times spiritual artwork. The uncertainty of what lies ahead and the constant reaching out to achieve and go forward while freezing thoughts in time is what motivates each of Herbie’s creations.

He primarily works in acrylics, taking a blank canvas and turning it into a visual whirlwind of emotion. He uses a myriad of colors to represent the many different races of the world. Herbie suggests that there is beauty in each color and that all people have the ability to come together and function as one; it is simply a matter of choice. Herbie's favorite artists are Picasso and Dali. Currently, Herbie resides with his fiancée and two children in Los Angeles as well as his second home in Dallas, Texas.
